Our commitment
We want everyone to be able to use exolp.com, including people who browse with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification or voice control. We aim for the site to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA, the standard the U.S. Department of Justice points to in its guidance on web accessibility and the ADA.
What we've done
- Structure. Every page has one main heading and headings in order beneath it, landmarks for its header, navigation, main content and footer, and a "Skip to content" link as the first thing you reach with the Tab key.
- Keyboard. Everything works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline: the menu, the buttons, the three app screens (through their Chemicals, Packs and Reports buttons), the planets, and the seven-stage tour, which takes the arrow keys and closes with Escape.
- Contrast. Text meets WCAG AA contrast against its background, and form fields, buttons and focus outlines have edges you can see.
- Forms. Every field has a visible label, the required ones say so, and the form's answer is announced to screen readers.
- Images. Pictures that carry meaning have text alternatives, and decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
- Motion. The stars, the orbiting planets and the occasional shooting star can be stopped with Pause motion at the top of the page, and the site remembers your choice. If your device asks for reduced motion, the site doesn't animate them at all. The tour moves only when you ask it to, and nothing on the site flashes.
- Zoom and small screens. Pages fit a phone's width without scrolling sideways, and text can be enlarged to 200%.
- No overlay. We don't use an accessibility overlay or widget. The pages are built to be accessible in their own code.
Limits we know of
- The three app screens beside the main heading are pictures of Pack-Star. Their detail isn't read out, but the caption under them says what they show.
- The star system in the Pack-Star section is a visual aid. Each of its seven stages is described in text, in the tour and on the planets' labels.
How we check
We review each change to the site against WCAG 2.1 AA before it goes live: using it by keyboard alone, measuring colour contrast, and checking its headings, labels, text alternatives and motion. Our automated checks also make sure no page loads anything from another website.
Tell us about a barrier
If something on the site is hard to use, or you need information from it in another format, write to [CONTACT EMAIL]. Tell us the page and what happened, and we'll reply and fix what we can.
